Fuel Theft On The Rise in 2008
Fuel theft is an increasing problem for businesses in a tough economic climate
With fuel prices on the increase in the third quarter of 2008, so is the rate of thefts from commercial vehicles. A number of cases over the last year highlight the serious impact of this problem for many companies across the country.
Most recently in December 08 police alerted HGV drivers in Surrey to be vigilant after 650 litres of fuel was siphoned from three lorries parked in a lay-by in Chertsey just off the M25. Surrey Police crime reduction adviser Maureen Ions says: "Local officers are concerned that having discovered an easy source of income, the offences will continue or move elsewhere."
In November 2008 police in East Yorkshire issued a security warning to haulers, one company experienced 6,000 litres of diesel being stolen from it's 14 trucks in the yard. A spokesman for Humberside Police appealed for witnesses to come forward and advised all haulage companies in the area to check their security in case the gang struck again.
June 2008 saw a transport company near Wolverhampton affected by theft, the company reported a loss of £100,000 through diesel thefts in a matter of weeks. The company has stated that any further thefts could result in the closure of the company and the loss of 40 jobs.
The anti-syphoning devices that aide automotive provide prevent theft from commercial vehicles. Matthew Burke, Sales Director advised "A small investment in this anti-theft equipment can save a company hundreds of thousands of pounds in the long-term. The devices are easy to fit, ideal for commercial vehicles and stop syphoning right from the top of the tank".
