The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has welcomed the news that the Goods Vehicles Act came into force in Northern Ireland on Sunday 1st July 2012.
“This is good news for Northern Ireland operators,” said RHA Director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Phil Flanders. “O licensing has applied to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in England, Scotland and Wales for many years. Its taken a lot of hard work but Northern Ireland has at last come into line with the rest of the UK”.
The new legislation will see much better standards of safety and enforcement in general . “This will have a big impact on many hauliers who, up until now, have been operating very close to the line of the law with quite a number breaking various laws,” Flanders continued.
“Those who have been operating vehicles that are poorly maintained or have been non-compliant with other regulations will finally be forced to either, quite literally, clean up their act or lose their licence. This is very good news for our industry and will go a long way to helping improve its image as well as creating a level playing field.”
